Is It Okay to Use AI When Writing a Novel?

“Okay” in what sense? Legally, commercially, ethically, artistically — these are different questions.

Legally

Legally: as covered elsewhere in this series, using AI in your writing process is legal. The copyright questions around AI-generated content are evolving, but the act of using the tool isn’t prohibited.

Commercially

Commercially: platform terms vary and are evolving, but self-publishing with AI assistance is commercially viable. Traditional publishing remains resistant to primarily AI-generated work.

Ethically

Ethically: this is where the interesting conversation lives. A few distinct concerns get bundled together under “AI writing ethics”:

Disclosure to readers — readers have a reasonable interest in knowing how a work was produced. Not because AI-assisted work is necessarily inferior, but because that information lets them make informed choices. Hiding AI involvement in work where it’s substantial feels like a breach of the implicit author-reader contract.

Impact on working writers — AI tools trained on human-authored fiction have been built on the creative labor of writers who weren’t compensated or consulted. This is a legitimate grievance that doesn’t have a clean resolution yet. Using the tools doesn’t make you a bad person; being aware of the tension and caring about how it resolves is the honest position.

Quality and craft — using AI to avoid the hard work of learning to write well is “okay” in the sense that no one will stop you, but it forecloses the development of genuine creative capability. Writers who use AI to accelerate work they already know how to do are in a different position than writers using AI to avoid learning the craft.

Artistically

Artistically: some writers and critics believe AI involvement is inherently compromising to the artistic integrity of a novel. Others see it as continuous with the long history of authors using whatever tools exist to do their work. Both positions are argued in good faith.

The honest answer: it’s okay to use AI when writing a novel. Whether you’re using it in a way that’s okay — for your readers, for your development as a writer, for the broader ecosystem — requires more than a yes or no.
