Yes — and people are already doing it.
The more precise question is: where can you publish it, under what terms, and with what disclosures?
Self-Publishing Platforms and AI Novels
Self-publishing platforms like Amazon KDP, Draft2Digital, and Smashwords don’t currently prohibit AI-assisted content outright, but their terms of service are evolving. Amazon KDP now requires authors to disclose whether a book contains AI-generated content at the time of upload. Failure to disclose can result in removal. Royal Road, which hosts serialized web fiction, has its own community norms that are often more skeptical of AI-generated work.
Traditional Publishers and AI Writing
Traditional publishers are a different story. Most major houses have added language to their submission guidelines explicitly asking about AI use. The majority of literary agents and publishers at the traditional end of the industry are currently unwilling to acquire work that is primarily AI-generated. This is partly aesthetic — editors want to acquire human creative vision — and partly contractual, given the unresolved copyright questions around AI output.
Hybrid and Small Presses
Hybrid and small presses are all over the map. Some are actively curious about the new creative territory. Others have firm no-AI policies. Read the submission guidelines.
The Disclosure Question
Disclosure is the issue that trips people up. Even where there’s no explicit legal requirement to disclose, building a readership on a false premise is a short-term strategy with long-term consequences. Readers who feel misled don’t come back. The authors who are navigating this space most successfully tend to be the ones leading with transparency — framing AI collaboration as part of their creative story rather than hiding it.
The honest framing for 2025: you can publish it, especially via self-publishing channels. The commercial ceiling for undisclosed AI work is lower than it used to be as detection awareness increases. The ceiling for honestly framed, high-quality AI-collaborative work is still being discovered.
