Have Any Novels Been Written with AI?

More than you’d think, fewer than the hype suggests.

The publishing landscape breaks into roughly three categories:

Disclosed AI Collaborations

Disclosed AI collaborations — works where the human author has been transparent about AI involvement in the creative process. These exist across self-publishing and a handful of small press releases. They range enormously in quality and in the depth of actual AI contribution.

Undisclosed AI Assistance

Undisclosed AI assistance — the category nobody can accurately count. Given the explosion of self-published titles on Amazon since 2022, and the accessibility of AI writing tools, it’s reasonable to assume that a significant percentage of recently published self-published fiction involved AI at some stage of production. Most authors in this category used AI as an editing or drafting assistant and didn’t disclose because no one asked.

Pure AI Output

Pure AI output — books generated primarily by AI tools with minimal human creative shaping, published at volume by accounts treating AI as a content factory. These are responsible for a significant portion of the genre flooding that’s drawn reader backlash in certain categories.

What Does “Written with AI” Even Mean?

The more culturally interesting question is what “written with AI” even means. If an author uses AI to brainstorm plot structure, generate a first draft, then rewrites substantially — is that “written with AI” the same way a book is “written with AI” when a human prompts the machine and publishes the output? The phrase is doing a lot of work for a wide range of actual practices.

What we can say clearly: human-AI collaborative fiction is no longer experimental. It exists across the market in various forms. The quality, transparency, and creative intent behind that collaboration varies enormously.
